Presentation Title: Bring Digital Badges To Your School or Classroom

Presentation Description: Badges, badges, badges. Fun, motivation, excitement. Ok, you get the point. Badges are a time tested (think like for 10,000 ago or more) method to bring out full achievement in students and adults. Everybody loves to receive recognition for things they have done.

The communication revolution (thanks Internet) means we can both give and display badges on a grander scale than ever before. My school is currently in a beta test stage for using badges with students and we would like to share our experiences so far.

This workshop will cover some of the ins and outs of using badges in and outside of the classroom.

Specifically:

* How it works
* Using Mozilla’s Open Badges Program
* How to issue badges
* How to display badges
* Badge use cases
* Setting up systems at your school to enable effective badge distribution

Presenter: Chris Betcher
Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia
Chris Betcher on G+

Presentation Title: Coding for Kids

Presentation Description: While not every student might want to write their own software, understanding the big ideas of coding is a skill that all students would benefit from, even the very young ones. Understanding the key ideas of computational thinking – identifying patterns, thinking algorithmically, manipulating data, solving real problems, etc – is an important step in helping our students build mastery over their world.
This presentation will take you on a guided tour through some of the resources available to your students to help them learn the principles of creating code. We’ll check out a range of desktop and iPad apps suitable for teaching very young students to program, through to tools and websites that can help your older students learn to hack code, and much more.

T3:Triple Threat in Tech: Art, Music, and Media

Published by:

Presenter: Carol Broos
Location: Gurnee, IL USA

Presentation Title: T3:Triple Threat in Tech: Art, Music, and Media

Presentation Description: Triple threat gridiron football is referring to a player who excels at all three of the skills of running, passing, and kicking. In theater, it is someone who can sing, dance, and act equally the same. In technology is it the ability to excel in creating your own artwork, composing your own music, then producing your own movies.

There are two interviews with educators that are triple threats, Tricia Fuglestad, a K-5 Art Teacher and Linda Keene, an architect and professor at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Once you take the plunge to be a triple threat, by creating your own art, composing your own music and producing your own movies, it will change in the way you interact with all the arts. You will begin to create more, learn more, and share more.

Carol Broos describes her process of creating art, composing music, and putting the icing on the cake, producing movies.

If You Want Data to Transform Learning, Present It as “Over-the-Counter”

Published by:

Presenter: Dr. Jenny Grant Rankin
Location: Laguna Beach, California, USA
@OTCData

Presentation Title: If You Want Data to Transform Learning, Present It as “Over-the-Counter”

Presentation Description: Educational leaders understand the importance of data as a tool to inform decisions. However, despite proactive steps educators already take to improve data use (such as professional development and staff supports), research suggests many educators are still analyzing data incorrectly. A largely-overlooked culprit is the manner in which data is communicated to educators. Data systems and reports most educators use to analyze data usually display figures without supporting guidance concerning the data’s proper use. This is akin to providing over-the-counter medication without any labeling or supporting documentation to guide people in the medicine’s proper use. In this presentation, the education data-equivalent to over-the-counter medicine is termed over-the-counter data: essentially, enlisting medical labeling conventions to pair education data reports with straightforward verbiage on the proper interpretation of report contents. The researcher in this quantitative study explored the inclusion of such supports in data systems and their reports. Respondents’ data analyses were found to be 307% more accurate when a report footer was present, 205% more accurate when an abstract was present, and 273% more accurate when an interpretation guide was present. These analysis supports followed specific guidelines to improve their success. Attendees will learn how to add these supports to their own data systems and reports so that educators using the data can do so with significantly increased accuracy.

Presentation Title: Building Learning Keynote – Making the Case for Making in Schools

Presentation Description: The Maker Movement is a revolutionary global collaboration of people learning to solve problems with modern tools and technology. Adults and children are combining new technologies and timeless craft traditions to create exciting projects and control their world. The implications are profound for schools and districts concerned with engaging students, maintaining relevance, and preparing children to solve problems unanticipated by the curriculum. The technological game-changers of 3D printing, physical computing and computer science require and fuel transformations in the learning environment. K-12 educators can adapt the powerful technology and “can do” maker ethos to revitalize learner-centered teaching and learning in all subject areas.
