Building Knowledge of Web Search

Presentation Title: Building Knowledge of Web Search

Presentation Description: Students should not be expected to suddenly sit down and complete a research project when they are in grade school. Children need time to build and scaffold their experiences. This video shares projects I complete with students in first through eighth grade that take them from a children’s dictionary scavenger hunt to learning to edit Wikipedia. One of the aspects that overwhelms students is that in addition to building a useful search query, they then have to go to the webpage and read the content in a sea of distracting links and screen cluttering ads. They need to be able to vet the information. In first grade, I give the students clues to find words in Little Explorer’s Picture Dictionary online. We build the concept in second and third grade through a cloze activity in which they find missing words. The student research state information for teachers. In fourth and fifth grade, the students learn about Sweet Search 4 Me and Google. They use paper encyclopedias and fill in missing information online. They learn to bookmark and site sources. In middle school, the students dig into aspects website details to determine the authority, bias, content, and usability of the information. They take charge of their learning by researching and presenting on a topic for which they have written a proposal. We learn to use search databases to dig deeper into the information available on the Internet. The students learn to edit Wikipedia and build our school’s entry.

Presentation Description: In this presentation I will use a presentation with videos imbedded to share how our energy-related projects combine STEM-related concepts in a PBL environment to help create a more student-centered learning experience. Real-life studies help make connections and create relevance for students. Through their study of these energy-related projects, students are exposed to environmental and economics lessons not possible simply by using a textbook. Videos will include me presenting background information (presentation) to help explain the projects along with videos of students working on various projects in the classroom to demonstrate the PBL approach being used.

The communication revolution (thanks Internet) means we can both give and display badges on a grander scale than ever before. My school is currently in a beta test stage for using badges with students and we would like to share our experiences so far.

Presentation Description: While not every student might want to write their own software, understanding the big ideas of coding is a skill that all students would benefit from, even the very young ones. Understanding the key ideas of computational thinking – identifying patterns, thinking algorithmically, manipulating data, solving real problems, etc – is an important step in helping our students build mastery over their world.

Presentation Description: Triple threat gridiron football is referring to a player who excels at all three of the skills of running, passing, and kicking. In theater, it is someone who can sing, dance, and act equally the same. In technology is it the ability to excel in creating your own artwork, composing your own music, then producing your own movies.

There are two interviews with educators that are triple threats, Tricia Fuglestad, a K-5 Art Teacher and Linda Keene, an architect and professor at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Once you take the plunge to be a triple threat, by creating your own art, composing your own music and producing your own movies, it will change in the way you interact with all the arts. You will begin to create more, learn more, and share more.

Presentation Description: After Reading, Writing, and “˜Rithmetic, is Reflection the New “Fourth R”?
In this video presentation, veteran teacher Betsy Hanger will explore the uses of mindfulness training in elementary classrooms. She will describe the curriculum of Mindful Schools (www.mindfulschools.org), connecting the skills developed to the students’ experiences. Examples of students’ journals and mindfulness activities in the classroom will give teachers a realistic idea of this important new movement in urban education. Betsy will answer these questions: 1) What is mindfulness? (definition, origins in medicine, psychology) 2) Who does mindfulness help? (Challenges that mindfulness training addresses: brain slides) 3) What is the curriculum? (three sets of skills, with three examples for each drawn from student work) 4) What improvements can I expect if I do mindfulness training in my classroom? (research, anecdotal experiences: video testimony) Resources for learning more about mindfulness training in classrooms are appended.
