Presentation Description: The new Common Core Standards for the Arts contain many standards involving greater levels of creativity and independence for music education. These standards, coupled with preparing today’s students for an ever-shifting professional landscape that requires more independent and collaborative technology skills, presents America’s traditional secondary performing music ensemble programs with a challenge: how do we still provide high quality performing ensembles and develop the individual students’ musical and creative abilities. Thomas J. West explains how incorporating the SAMR Model of Technology Integration along with cloud-based methods of Blended Learning enables middle school and high school instrumental music students to take control of their own learning and become independent, well-rounded musicians capable of 21st Century Artistry.

Presentation Title: Writing – It’s All about Collaboration and Sharing

Presentation Description: Educators are of two minds when it comes to standards – love them or leave them. But there is good news when it comes to modern writing standards. Today’s writing standards, such as the Common Core State Standards in the United States insist on sharing and collaboration. Authentic digital age writing experiences remain an essential cornerstone for our 21st Century students. Having students share their thoughts with a global audience has never been more important. In this video presentation, I will share the standards based argument for providing students open and collaborative opportunities for sharing their writing. Participants will met educators and students who have transcended the walls of the classroom and have reaped the benefits of open and collaborative writing. In addition to my video presentation, I will provide participants with links and resources that will support open and collaborative writing experiences for students in a standards based classroom.

Presentation Title: Visioning New Curriculum

Presentation Description: This keynote session by Karen Fasimpaur for the “Visioning New Curriculum” strand talks about the unique opportunities presented by Common Core, digital tools, openness, and innovation. The time for one-size-fits-all, top-down curriculum is over. This session gives examples of curriculum that is personalized, real world, iterative, and collaborative. It is time for a new era in curriculum — one that is digital, open, innovative, and built by and for our community. This video includes reflection questions which can be explored collaboratively at https://p2pu.org/en/groups/k12-online-2012/ The ideas in this video were developed collaboratively with a group of many people much smarter than me. Thanks to everyone who played along. This process was a testament to the power of collaboration and of creation as way to reflect and learn.
