How Schools Are Preparing Students To Be Real World Ready

Presentation Description: “Real world ready” is a phrase that has evolved in the education world over the past several decades. Beginning with a focus on literacy and math skills needed to be successful adults and productive members of society and being revised over the years as norms and expectations for college enrollment changed and expanded to a larger section of graduating high school students and the knowledge and preparation they would need for the types of careers they might pursue changed. In my opinion, the phrase has now evolved to include all states of learning and tools, both in-school and beyond, that help the student gain knowledge or skills and make connections that will help him/her to understand the global, connected world better and to be prepare himself/herself for the life-long learning and adapting he/she will need to make connections, adapt, grow, evolve, and excel outside of the traditional classroom walls. Real world ready is an unending, changing state flexible enough to keep up with the advances of our society and limited only by students’ imagination and creativity and the impact that schools can have in either a positive or negative way. The technology that is evolving today has a direct impact on the jobs and careers available for our students’ futures. As educators, we have to ensure that we are preparing our students for 21st century careers and not those of the past. By integrating technology into our teaching, we can ignite students’ passions to engage them in school and build their skills in the areas of creativity, collaboration, research, and problem solving.

Presentation Description: Out My Window was born from a quest to have students gain global perspective. OMW classrooms share their story with the world. Inspired by the 5 themes of geography, students reveal cultural awareness & understanding through poetry & photography.

Goals for the session:
To involve more classrooms in the quest to gain global perspective
To showcase the power of content and concept convergence
To provide an example of meaningful technology integration
To honor student voice and ability to create for an audience

Our perspective is shaped by our experiences. Those experiences are shaped by where we live. The themes of geography can be addressed through personal narrative, and when that happens an appreciation for all that is experienced and all that is seen is heightened. Stories are the thread connecting us all. Using geography, photography, and poetry participants can share and celebrate their story. Because the project is about sharing all of this, an audience can gain also connect to the creator’s story.

Out My Window transforms how we look at and teach geography by making it a cross-curricular tool to connect with a global community. Honoring student voice and perspective in the process of not just consuming, but creating content also honors the power of the human story. Traditionally, geography is not viewed as poetic. The emotion poetry can incite connected to geography’s theme is transformative. Imagine if more students globally gained an appreciation for people and their perspectives…imagine how that would influence empathy.

We Are All Connected

Tim has a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Instruction, and another in Education Leadership. Tim has been in the education field for over 27 years, first as a teacher, then an education facilitator, a researcher, and a Director of Instructional Technology. And if you count his years as a student, he pretty much has been in education all his life.

Tim is a past President of the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT) and as well as being a Past President of the Technology Directors Special Interest Group (TECSIG) of the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA). He is the recipient of the ISTE “Pink Jacket” award for achievement in Education Technology.

His blog, Holtthink (Holtthink.tumblr.com) was named one of the top 50 most influential Education Technology blogs for the second year in a row by Ed Tech Magazine.

Tim lives in Canutillo Texas, just outside of El Paso, where he has been a lifelong resident of the area. He is married to Lora Holt and has 4 wonderful children.

Presentation Description: In my presentation, I share my perspective on technology integration in the k-12 environment through lessons learned throughout my sixteen-year transformation from tech savvy classroom teacher to technology integration specialist. My roles as English teacher, library media specialist, technology coach, and instructional coach and the many professional development programs I’ve experienced have all been pivotal in developing the philosophy I have today concerning technology integration. Every successful step I’ve taken along the way has been dependent on building relationships, and those that were unsuccessful lacked the vital support from teachers, students, parents, administrators, and staff to make technology integration successful. I’ll transform the lessons I’ve learned into easy guidelines to follow as you take on the challenge of embracing technology in k-12 classrooms.

Augmenting Interest in Reading with Augmented Reality

Presentation Description: Through screencasts, presentation tools and videos of interviews with teachers and students, I will share examples of students creating videos about books they are reading that are linked through the Augmented Reality app Aurasma. Viewers will hear about students drafting their videos, recording their videos, linking their videos, and watching each other’s videos using the Aurasma app. Teachers and students will share how creating these augmented reality apps have encouraged reading in their classrooms, helped students find books they want to read and has sparked an interest in presenting books in new and interesting ways. Teachers and students will also give advice about the best ways to use augmented reality in the classroom as well as make suggestions about how you can use Aurasma in your classroom or school library.

A Tale of Three Classrooms: How and Why We Read, Write, and Think for Each Other

Presentation Description: This presentation demonstrates how a good idea was born out of a collaboration involving three teachers who first set out to do something very traditional with their English classes. Growing from a shared interest to try something different, teachers experimented to understand the organic but deliberate aspects of one instance of collaboration, made possible by technology and open-minded spirits. In the beginning, however, the idea was largely traditional: to host a collaborative, inter-institutional paper conference for high school students. This is the story of how a traditional vision became the catalyst for 21st century learning practices – attempting, from there, to outline the emotional anatomy of such collaborative experiences.

New media presents promising opportunities for students and teachers together to think beyond traditional methods for collaboration, and our experience is a story about learning involving three classes that simultaneously engaged two literary texts in such a way. Collaboratively, students read more critically, thought more divergently, and synthesized their ideas creatively; they engaged in unexpected conversations, demonstrated knowledge through multiple media, and inspired creative thinking in their peers and us, demonstrating the relationship between teaching practices and student habits of mind. Digital/nontraditional collaboration empowered students to formulate questions for new audiences, to understand through practice the relationship between purpose, audience, and word – doing so by blogging articles, preparing videos, and recording audio mp3s. The story concludes with the final composition of traditional conference papers, shared inter-institutionally, and we seek to outline the logistics and emotional realities of such an endeavor.

PLN Power: A Personal Story
