Presentation Title: Technology and Drama – teaching with glove puppets
Presentation Description: A junior science class is used here to demonstrate a lesson about multicelular organisms using glove puppets with a constructivist approach to problem solving and blended learning model. It has even been adapted by the teacher Roland Gesthuizen to help explore complex topics including technology issues such as cyberbullying, privacy, programming, copyright, freedom and ethical behaviour whilst improving their literacy and social skills. This is a very engaging way to quickly assess student understanding using some simple technology and computer skills without the need for sophisticated digital equipment.

Additional Information:
Hey Roland, nice work on the video and a really interesting way to get the students learning about science concepts. I’ve heard you mention your glove puppets before but it’s only just made sense to me how you actually use them. The kids seem quite into it.
Thanks for sharing!
Chris
Thanks Roland for a most entertaining and insightful show.
Puppets are a regular feature of my Year 2 classroom, but the use of video is a great way to add value: both planning and scripting, and also sharing the videos. Who can we share them with? Parents via portfolios, students who were away from class that day, younger students, the whole class to critique the presentation of the information. I can’t wait to show this to my Grade Two class. We will be looking at how to plan a good puppet show. We will also be looking at the segment about how seeds spread in particular, as this concept is related to one of our ongoing class inquiries.
Hey, congratulate your wonderful students!
cheers

Makes me wish that I taught young kids. I used puppets when my kids were younger and think that it is a great idea for socialization and teaching. Great for classroom climate.
Students using hand puppets to help learn different subjects (in this cause Science) is a unique way to grab a students attention in a more interesting way of learning as well as a tool to use through the web of This form of learning I believe relates to what the younger student population is familiar to.
