Presentation Title: Using Web 2.0 Tools to Teach ‘The Outsiders’

Presentation Description: Having been asked to deliver truly cross-curricular ICT to support the Extra English lessons provided for a small group of students, I decioded to use a range of Web 2.0 tools to asist with this. Inspired by the work of Tom Barrett and ‘We Tell Stories’ I decided to create an immersive experience that would help the students have a better understanding of the book. Amongst the tools I used for this were Stupeflix, Google Maps and Google Streetview. The students were able to produce work that was far more involved and detailed than that which they had produced before. As teachers we can be inspired by each other and this presentation is my tribute to this.

That was a brilliant presentation! Thank you for the inspiration and the reflection. The story you presented shows a teacher working at his best. When you find the way in to a student’s mind and allow them to explore their own abilities with success, you are creating hope in them as well. I love their personal connection you made using the street view of Google Maps.

That was one of those presentations that gave me a Ah ha! moment. So many ideas came to mind. I’m familiar with all the apps mentioned but never thought of putting them together like that.
    Thanks Drew

Reciprocal inspiration occurred! My US students read Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None and have a tough time contextualizing the characters and setting. Stupefilx and Google Maps can bring the UK to them as these apps brought greasers and Tulsa (not our finest cultural archetypes!) ignited your reluctant learners.
