Overcoming Obstacles: From ‘Yes, But’ to ‘Why Not?’ and ‘How Can We?’

Presentation Description: Whenever any sort of change or innovation is discussed, the ‘Yes, but…’ objections are inevitable. However, instead of allowing those resistance points to dominate and defeat promising ideas, teachers and administrators can reframe opposition into possibility by asking the questions ‘Why not?’ and ‘How can we?’ Effective educators focus on adaptation, forward progress, and collective effort and efficacy. The ‘yes, buts’ don’t do anything except keep us stuck. Too often we get mired in negativity and defeatism instead of recognizing that – both individually and collectively – we usually have the ability to do and be so much more than our current reality reflects. This keynote focuses on transformative leadership mindsets and features exemplary schools from around the world that are ignoring the ‘yes, buts’ to make amazing things happen for children and youth.

Presentation Description: Don Wettrick is an Innovation Specialist at Noblesville High School, just outside Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the author of “Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level”. Wettrick has worked as a middle school and high school teacher; educational and innovation consultant; and educational speaker. Don is passionate about helping students find their educational opportunities and providing them with the digital tools they need to give them a competitive edge. This video provides a look inside Don’s Innovation class. He begins with how the class started started, and goes into the “ROTH-IRA” method of innovation. Lastly, several of Don’s students discuss the Innovation class and the impact it has had on them as students and learners.

Presentation Description: Making Learning Connected 2014 (#clmooc) was truly a hub for igniting innovation and inspiring passion in Connected Learning. Each week, our “Make Cycle” initiated a new strand of thinking that was taken up, modified, and remixed in a variety of ways. In our video presentation, we will briefly share the background of #clmooc, the theory of action behind establishing iterative “Make Cycles” as well as highlight example “Makes” that were created and shared. We will also share some of the resources that were developed during Making Learning Connected 2014 that might be useful for others thinking about this work in their own contexts, such as collected archives of weekly newsletters, webinars and Twitter chats.

Presentation Description: Triple threat gridiron football is referring to a player who excels at all three of the skills of running, passing, and kicking. In theater, it is someone who can sing, dance, and act equally the same. In technology is it the ability to excel in creating your own artwork, composing your own music, then producing your own movies.

There are two interviews with educators that are triple threats, Tricia Fuglestad, a K-5 Art Teacher and Linda Keene, an architect and professor at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Once you take the plunge to be a triple threat, by creating your own art, composing your own music and producing your own movies, it will change in the way you interact with all the arts. You will begin to create more, learn more, and share more.

Vicki Davis and Julie Linsday co-founded the Flat Classroom Project in November 2006. In the five years since, more than 5,000 students from age 4 and up have joined with other classrooms around the world to collaborate in projects like The Flat Classroom Project, the Digiteen Project, ‘A week in the Life’ Elementary Flat Classroom Project, and the Eracism Project and the founding of a non-profit to run their conference and face to face events.

Their work and public sharing of pedagogy on their blogs has led to their recent book, Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds from Pearson Publishing coming in January 2012.

Presentation Description: We believe that education is the vehicle to social change everyone craves. We believe that personalization is now possible in public school, because of the connections to people and info the web now allows. We believe that the process of learning how to learn, amped by the personalization digital equity allows is the new standard.

In the lab, we are experimenting with ways to facilitate personalized learning and ownership. We believe learning and self-constructing is natural, but most people need to break out of habits focused on following rules. Experimentation means doing, and doing breeds mistakes. Risk of failure blinds many to their potential. We believe playing it safe today is a greater risk.
