“Motivating Student Writers by Fostering Collaboration through Tagging and Aggregating”

Description
The presenters play with boundaries through the simple expedient of having student bloggers in different countries tag their blog posts with the unique tag term writingmatrix. Searching on that tag in Technorati, the student bloggers in four locations in three different countries have managed to locate one another’s posts, leave comments for one another, and have subsequently interacted in other ways as well. The presenters explain how they started the project and how it has branched into other online and even face to face activities involving the students in the participant countries. The presentation is made not only through the voices of the presenters, but with the students themselves lending their voices through their blogs and videos.

    Wow, what a GREAT presentation on so many levels. This was the best example of a “blended” presentation I’ve ever seen.     Thank you so much for your kind comments and reflections, Wesley. The writingmatrix project has been a very special experience for me as a teacher and as a person. It’s been for the first time for me to use in class the knowledge and insights gained as a member of the Webheads CoP and as a participant of TESOL EVO courses. These profoundly changed my teaching and learning. From chalk and blackboard to Web 2.0. From isolation to sharing, connecting and collaborating across borders.
    I’ve just started blogging with my new groups this week and, like my old group, these new students are also eagerly getting connected to the world outside and using their English as best they can. It matters to them because they know they have real audience out there. It’s not just me reading their posts. It’s so rewarding to see students enjoy learning. :-)

    It seemed interesting. I liked that you can connect with so many people throughout the world. Unfortunately, the present froze and I never got to find out how to tag! :(

  4. This is such a great example of collaboration at it\’s best. You are providing your students with the tools that will prepare them for their future. They now know how to collaborate and how to leverage tools (RSS, blogs, social bookmarking, etc.) that will make them much more productive in the 21st century. Great presentation!
