iCreate vs. iConsumption

Presenter: Scott Meech

Presentation Description: Many argue that the iPad is the premiere consumption device at this time but it isn’t very good at creating. I want to walk through some thoughts to battle that thinking. Creating on the iPad is different but it is an effective creation device. The very nature of the device itself and how we interface with it provide for a uniquely creative environment. Effectively creating on the iPad requires a different workflow from traditional computers. Once users get proficient with that workflow, the iPad becomes an amazing creation device!

  2. Thanks for an informative presentation Scott.
My classroom iPad use certainly changed when I discovered screencasting, thanks to the #slide2learn conference in Queensland Australia this year. I appreciate your tip about Explain Everything app, and have discovered its powerful ability to share creative products so easily. Thanks for this tip and others.
    Cheers

  18. [...] iCreate vs. iConsumption was presented by Scott Meech and posted by Ginger Lewman in December of 2011. “Many argue that the iPad is the premiere consumption device at this time but it isn’t very good at creating. I want to walk through some thoughts to battle that thinking. Creating on the iPad is different but it is an effective creation device. The very nature of the device itself and how we interface with it provide for a uniquely creative environment. Effectively creating on the iPad requires a different workflow from traditional computers. Once users get proficient with that workflow, the iPad becomes an amazing creation device!” Not even sure why this was a topic, to me, the commercial make it very obvious that iPads are good at creating. There are millions of apps. Plus, I have seen how people can draw and do things just as easily as if they had a tablet or something. I mean, it is lovely he showed how to create on an iPad and how it could be effective. This is something an educator could present in front of the school board to try to get iPads in their district or building. Personally, I like have an actual laptop to work with but I do like the fact textbooks are on iPads and educational games. I do just want students to realize there are other ways to be creative without depending on a machine to do all the work for you. I think an equal balance is healthy. [...]

  21. [...] After attending an AP Institute workshop at SCAD Atlanta, I was truly made aware of the presence that technology is having on changing our world. Students are creating digital artwork in their 2D portfolios for AP Studio Art. The college board is aware of the changes and are trying be ready for this change.
