Happy Connected Educator Month!

Published by:

ce14-blog-banner-2

This month of October, many educators around the world will be celebrating Connected Educator Month.

This is a month full of activities, like the K12 Online Conference, to establish or deepen our online connections with others. Many of us have found that being “connected” has made our teaching and learning practices deeper and more rewarding, and that’s what this month is all about.

If you are new to Connected Educator Month, how can you participate? Here are a few ways.

  • Sign up for the CEM newsletter.
  • Check out the Connected Educator Starter Kit.
  • If you know a teacher or administrator who isn’t yet “connected,” help them take one small step to get started. Perhaps watch a K12 Online conference session with them and then share what you learn via social media or a blog.
  • If you aren’t on Twitter, join! (We are on Twitter @k12online.)
  • Watch the CEM calendar for lots of great events, and take part in a few that resonate with you.
  • Tell others about the K12 Online Conference, and consider organizing a local viewing party or incorporating our videos into your formal professional development.

Wishing you all a great Connected Educator Month!

K12 Online 2014 Call for Proposals

Published by:

** DEADLINE EXTENDED – CALL FOR PROPOSALS NOW OPEN THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2 **

The 2014 K12 Online Conference organizer team is pleased to announce dates for this year’s conference as well as our call for proposals. Since 2006, K12 Online has offered unique, free, entirely volunteer-powered opportunities for educators worldwide to share and learn together about innovative ways to use technology tools to enhance teaching and learning at all levels.

PLEASE CLICK HERE TO OPEN THE 2014 CALL FOR PROPOSALS! (due September 2)

The theme for the 2014 conference is “Igniting Innovation.” The conference will begin with a pre-conference keynote on Monday, October 13th. The next two weeks, starting on October 20th, 40 presentations will be published in four different strands, with four presentations posted per day. Presentations must be a single media file of twenty minutes or less (but not too much less) in length and meet other requirements specified in the online call for proposals. Presentations are due two weeks prior to the week the relevant strand begins. All presentations will be shared under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Unported license. The 2014 conference strands are Gamification and Gaming, Stories for Learning, Passion-driven learning, and STEM.

Gamification and Gaming (convened by Jose Rodriguez)
How can game thinking, design and mechanics be employed to make learning more engaging and fun? This strand will highlight ways educators are using gamification to transform classroom learning and encourage students to “level up” as they learn knowledge and skills both inside and outside the classroom.

Stories for Learning (convened by Susan van Gelder)
Sharing stories is a great way to learn. In the telling and the listening, learning deepens. Stories by students, by teachers, about discoveries, about classrooms… Let’s gather around the virtual campfire for some storytelling.

Passion-driven learning (convened by Karen Fasimpaur)
What does learning look like when it starts with learners’ passions and interests? This strand will cover topics such as Genius Hour, Connected Learning, interest-driven blogging, independent projects, and more.

STEAM (convened by Paula Naugle)
How are teachers and others helping students develop skills and a love of learning through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities and lessons? This strand will highlight innovative STEM learning, projects, and ideas, as well as the ways the arts and creativity are included in STEAM.

Please see our “Presentation Guidelines” for more information about formats and requirements. These guidelines will be updated by June 30th with a few changes.

Please consider submitting a proposal for the 2014 K12 Online Conference by September 2, and personally invite other educators you know to submit a proposal. K12 Online offers great learning experiences every year because of our fantastic presenters. Your encouragement to others to present, as well as your own willingness to present, will make K12 Online 2014 a fantastic learning experience for many teachers around the world!
