Super Social Safety Digiteens Present the Top Sites for Kids Ages 8-12: Invitation to Join

Published by:

As part of the k12 online conference 2009 and as a conclusion to the Digiteen Project #3 of 2009, students from Westwood Schools will be presenting their top socially connected sites for kids aged 8-12 (and some that they DO NOT recommend.)  As part of Digiteen 2009, these students felt that many sites that are marketed to kids aged 8-12 are not appropriate nor safe and set out to review and test the best.  They have been blogging and have a twitter account (@socialsafety) and will be presenting live in Elluminate on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 from 12:15 pm-12:45 pm and answer your questions about their testing experiences.

At the conclusion of the student presentation, from 12:45pm – 1:15 pm leading social internet safety expert, Anne Collier will reflect and talk with students about their findings.  Backchannel questions will be included in the conversation.

This is just one of the many action projects of the Digiteen project: A Flat Classroom project. This project will be moderated by Vicki Davis, and led by student project manager, Erin B from Westwood Schools.

Ning Problems Today Almost All Resolved

Published by:

As you may have noticed, most of the day on Monday our K-12 Online Conference Ning was offline / not available. According to the official Ning status blog, all features except messaging and RSS feeds are back up and working as of this writing. We have no idea what the problem was with Ning today, but it was not limited to just our K12Online site, and we don’t think we can take the blame for overwhelming the entire domain with traffic! It appears this was just an unlucky coincidence that it happened on the first day of week 1 of our conference! Thankfully at this point, we are using multiple sites and our blog (this site) was up without any problems all day, as were our video hosting sites (DotSub and Blip.tv). We also used both our Twitter account and Facebook page to share status updates throughout the day.

If you have a smartphone or other mobile device capable of accessing the Internet, you can use the web address k12online.ning.com/m to access a mobile-optimized version of our Ning website.

Videos are not viewable/playable from this mobile Ning site, but you can use our podcast RSS feeds to directly view and play presentations on your mobile devices. We did announce today via Twitter and Facebook that our podcast RSS feeds are now included in the iTunes Podcast Directory. Please rate and comment on our iTunes podcast channels so we can hopefully become “featured” in iTunes. The more visibility our conference can have the better!

Thanks to a WordPress plug-in (WordPress Mobile Edition) we are using, hopefully our blog automatically shows up in a mobile-optimized format if you’re using a mobile device to view it.

We will keep our fingers crossed that today’s Ning problems will not recur for the rest of the conference!

Spread the Word! K12Online09 Printable Flyer Available

Published by:

Please help us spread the word about the 2009 K-12 Online Conference by forwarding one of the two-page PDF flyers below to other educators with whom you work and know. While we encourage forwarding via email attachment to save paper/trees, this PDF flyer is also appropriate to print (as a double sided / duplex page) and place in teacher mailboxes at school! Feel free to use this however you can to spread the word about the K-12 Online Conference!

Because we are an international conference, we are continuing to use GMT times for all our events both on our 2009 schedule as well as on our Ning Events page. Converting GMT times can be confusing, however, so we are providing editable MS-Word (.doc) format versions of these documents so you can customize these times for your local time zone. Note on both our main conference schedule page as well as our conference Ning site Events page, hyperlinks are provided to “fixed date and time pages” on timeanddate.com. Click these provided links to view event start dates/times for your local time zone. Then edit one of the MS-Word formatted flyers for your local time zone, and circulate that to educators you know.

Note the time for our first fireside chat is 1 am GMT on Friday, December 4th, which is 8 pm EST on Thursday, December 3rd. These differences in dates and times due to time zones make it essential we provide educators with localized dates/times on printed flyers when possible.
