Presentation Description: How do you measure up? How do yougrow from month to month and year to year in a tough profession that often lives in the tyranny of the urgent? This presentation explores ‘food for thought’ background and issues to do with growing and succeeding in a flattened educational environment and encourages you to pick several areas for improvement this year.It also offers tips for carving out “time to think”, and the development of mentorship and the grassroots movement of educators and how you can “join in.” Educators around the world can set your goals for improvement and share what they are doing this year to kick it up a notch and grow as well.

Kicking it up a Notch Games in Education

Bio: Sylvia hasprogrammed and designed educational games for consumer and school markets. For 8 years she was executive producer at Davidson & Associates, the makers of Math Blaster, and designed games for all subjects and ages. She’s also been in charge of console and PC casual game design for adults and children, working in all aspects of design, development, manufacturing and publishing.

Presentation Description: It sounds like a simple idea– kids don’t like school”¦ kids like games, so if we sneak some educational content into games, won’t everyone benefit? This session will explore what’s right and wrong about this idea, and how educators can discern the difference between the hype and the promise. I believe that although some of the promise has been oversold, there is much to learn from exploring the educational promise of games in the classroom.

Where do I find stuff?

Published by:

If you’re new to k12 online and aren’t sure where to find stuff, let me see if I can help. First of all, there is a lot of stuff on this site. We currently have 2 years of presentations and are now adding a 3rd year of content. Trying to keep all the information easily accessible is a challenge.

The first place to start is the green links in the upper right hand side of every page. These are your quick links to the most important stuff. The firstTimers link will take you to our helpdesk site which will answer many if not all of your questions.

The links down the right hand side beginning with the title “Categories” will have you find specific strands from previous years and this year’s presentations.

A live help desk is staffed throughout the duration of the conference to assist anyone needing help with any aspect of this unique learning event. Again look in the upper right corner of every page of the blog for the Help Desk link with more information about getting assistance.

One of the best ways to download and watch conference is presentations is by using free podcatcher software like iTunes. To facilitate downloading of video and audio versions of conference presentations, separate “podcast channels” for audio and video are available for the 2008 conference. (Past channels for 2007 are available too!)

If you still have questions,  leave a comment below and someone will get back to you. We aim to please.

Live Events for K12 Online

Published by:

As the K12 Online Conference is fast approaching, members of the Live Events committee are planning a number of interesting ways for you to become involved. As in the past, we will be hosting Elluminate and Skype chats during the keynote sessions and fireside chats, and we will once again welcome participation in When Night Falls. Check the conference schedule for dates and times of the events. (Note: If you are interested in serving as a moderator for When Night Falls, please check out the Moderator page!)

An exciting new addition this year is our Cup of Joe discussion groups.  Conversations around each presentation will be gathered and brought to life through the use of VoiceThread. Each presenter has identified three essential questions relating to their session and these will be posted on a correlating presentation VoiceThread. We encourage you and your colleagues to grab a cup of coffee, listen to a session or two, and then share your thoughts/reflections on the VoiceThreads. We hope these essential questions will help facilitate reflection for individuals as well as larger groups. And, as part of your reflection we ask that you let us know who you are, what you do, and where you grabbed your Cup of Joe!
