Presentation Title: Going Global: Culture Shock, Convergence and the Future of Education
Presentation Description: Looking at daily life in foreign lands reveals a colorful spectrum of inspiring metaphors for the shifts we need to make in education. Often what we may find initially chaotic, disorienting and strange in other countries can actually spark new ways of thinking about teaching and learning. Through the voices of teachers and students from around the world, we’ll examine the unique aptitudes which allow successful expats to thrive in any environment. These are exactly the skills that future students and teachers will need to confidently enter the digital, global, converging, collaborative world of tomorrow – wherever they might be physically located.

Questions for discussion:
What global experiences have you had in real life or online that influenced your thinking about education?
Are you, or do you know any, Third Culture Kids? Do you think they share any common characteristics that make them different from people who grew up in a single culture?
How are you connecting yourself, and your students, globally? What changes have occurred (for example: in mindset, attitude or outlook) as a result of those connections?
Also join the discussion about this presentation on our conference Ning!

Spread the Word! K12Online09 Printable Flyer Available
Please help us spread the word about the 2009 K-12 Online Conference by forwarding one of the two-page PDF flyers below to other educators with whom you work and know. While we encourage forwarding via email attachment to save paper/trees, this PDF flyer is also appropriate to print (as a double sided / duplex page) and place in teacher mailboxes at school! Feel free to use this however you can to spread the word about the K-12 Online Conference!
Because we are an international conference, we are continuing to use GMT times for all our events both on our 2009 schedule as well as on our Ning Events page. Converting GMT times can be confusing, however, so we are providing editable MS-Word (.doc) format versions of these documents so you can customize these times for your local time zone. Note on both our main conference schedule page as well as our conference Ning site Events page, hyperlinks are provided to “fixed date and time pages” on timeanddate.com. Click these provided links to view event start dates/times for your local time zone. Then edit one of the MS-Word formatted flyers for your local time zone, and circulate that to educators you know.
Note the time for our first fireside chat is 1 am GMT on Friday, December 4th, which is 8 pm EST on Thursday, December 3rd. These differences in dates and times due to time zones make it essential we provide educators with localized dates/times on printed flyers when possible.
