We are continuing to maintain our k12onlineconference.org website, however, with links to all our past presentations and referenced resources. We know many pre-service teacher educators have utilized our presentations with students and classes, since all our content is Creative Commons licensed, and we hope that re-use will continue! Even though many technology tools have come and gone and most continue to be updated, there are still wonderful and inspiring presentations to view here that can and will “stand the test of time!”

Over the years, some of the websites hosting our content have gone offline or deleted our content. These have included the College of William and Mary and Blip.tv. Our presentations continue to be hosted by YouTube / Google for ALL the keynotes from all years, and on iTunesU for all presentations starting with 2007, 2008, 2010-2017 (We are missing many from 2009).

We want to thank all of you who have contributed and participated in the K-12 Online Conference over the years, and have helped make it such a wonderful, annual opportunity for inspiring professional learning for educators. We especially thank our organizers over the years, whose names and Twitter IDs are listed on our About page. Many, many hours have been spent here by LOTS of wonderful educators, and we appreciate all the passion, time, and energy which has been put into this amazing online (and entirely FREE / volunteer powered) learning community.

Among the multitude of free, online professional development opportunities still available for educators worldwide, we particularly encourage you to check out the following events. Some of these are annual, while others are more regular:

1. Classroom 2.0 LIVE (Every Saturday at noon Eastern time)

4. EduCon Conference (January each year, face-to-face with online streamed sessions)

This summer, starting on August 1, 2018, the two week, #HiveSummit (hivesummit.org) is being convened. Like K12Online, #HiveSummit is free and participant-led, but videos will only be available online for a limited time:

The #HiveSummit will release one new video a day, for the first nine days of August. All videos will stay open in the summit for 14 days. After that time, they will disappear.

It is important to create both buzz and immediacy for digital learning events, to draw participants and encourage people to use one of our most precious and non-renewable resources: Our attention. The K12 Online Conference, in continuing to make its presenter videos and resources available perpetually, and innovating with the use of live/synchronous events in conjunction with asynchronous presentation videos, like our “Echo webcasts,” stands as a landmark experiment in volunteer-led, online digital professional development.

Is there any cost involved?

No, this online conference is free and open to anyone, anywhere, to view and comment. If you are affiliated with a commercial vendor, please see our “Goals and Values” page for clarification on participation as an individual.

How do I participate? Do I need to register?

No registration is required. You are welcome to sign our Guest Book. During the conference dates you participate by downloading the presenter’s content or viewing it online, reviewing it, and then posting feedback or comments. Comments can be posted on our conference blog. The conference schedule identifies when a particular presenter’s content will be available (after the identified date, the schedule will have a link to the content). You can also attend our culminating live event. Live events provide an opportunity for you to listen to the week’s presenters, ask questions directly and visit with other participants (virtually, speaking). It’s a good idea to watch this conference feed for conference information, follow the conference twitter feed, or check back regularly to the conference website.

Can I view previous year’s presentations?

Yes! All of the presentations and supporting materials are available for the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 conferences.

Tips for first time participants

Don’t try to take it all in at once. Pick a strand and follow it. View, perhaps, only one presentation per day. Try to attend the culminating live event if you can!

Managing the information overload

Like any conference, you’re best to review the program ahead of time and choose the sessions that most interest you. Once the conference starts, you’ll find things happening at fast/furious so it’s best to plan ahead!

Divide and Conquer

Work with a colleague to share the information. Just like at an “in-person” conference, go to different sessions and “get the information and handouts” then report back.

Get everyone together for a keynote session, then assign people to report back on the key points in one presentation.

Professional Development Parties

You, the presenter and several other colleagues: Why not make it a school event and get together after school, at lunch time, whenever to view the conference sessions with colleagues? Pick one that interests you and/or fits your school ‘s goals.

Asynchronous Professional Development

If you’re busy all week, remember, the conference is mostly asynchronous (not happening in real time) so you can catch up with the conference later. All links to past conference presentations are accessible using the navigation links at the top of each page.

Our K12 Online Conference is drawing closer, and your convenors are sending this letter to let you know about expectations, guidelines, dates, and deadlines for the conference. Hopefully this letter and our website resources will provide you with all the information you’ll need to have a successful and positive experience with K12 Online this year as a presenter.

First of all, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU for presenting and sharing ideas with our global learning community through K12 Online this year. We have been putting on this conference for many years, and we continue to learn a great deal, but one thing we’ve known from the start is that our presenters are truly the heart and soul of our conference. We appreciate the time and effort you have put in and will put in to make a fantastic presentation and help educate other teachers through your work with K12 Online this year. WE APPRECIATE YOU!

Teaser Videos

As we have done in years past, we are inviting presenters to submit short “teaser videos” about their presentations to their respective strand convenor. A teaser video is OPTIONAL, but highly recommended. Here are some examples of past teaser videos.

Presentation Deadlines and Guidelines

Presentations are due two weeks before the start of the week they “go live.”

For 2016, “Learning Spaces” and “Student Voices” session videos are due on or before October 3, 2016.

“Design Thinking” and “Creativity” session videos are  due on or before October 10, 2016.

As you know we have a length limit for presentations. Your final presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes total in length and should not be shorter than 15 minutes. This file is to be in H.264-compatible format, such as a .MOV or .MP4. We have a guide of recommended compression settings to use during export.  Each presenter will be limited to submitting ONLY ONE presentation media file. You are welcome to include links to additional supporting materials, but only one presentation file may be submitted as your main presentation file. (Keynote presentations can exceed 20 minutes.)

All presentations for the K12 Online Conference will be published under a Creative Commons license. By agreeing to present, and in submitting your proposal, all presenters acknowledge their presentation will be published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. Note that this means you may not include external content in your presentation unless it is public domain or licensed CC BY.

File and Presentation Submission Procedures

1. Upload your presentation (by your deadline) to a file sharing site. Please do NOT upload to YouTube. Try:
   1. DropBox
   2. Google Drive
   3. www.wetransfer.com
   4. Box.com
2. Post your presentation information to our conference blog using an online web form we are creating. This form will include fields for you to enter your final presentation title, description, personal website, the link to retrieve your video from ge.tt etc. The link to the form will be sent to you by your strand convenor.
3. Please do not publish your presentations publicly prior to their release for the conference. Thank you.
