Presentation Description: As the Head of the Imagination Chapter in Cape Town, I get to help young students and their parents get in touch with their creative juices every week. I then connect with other chapter leaders around the world and we share our ideas and experiences. Presentation Description: Join me and my students on this Appsmashing adventure, Science Is All Around Our Town!
Students took a picture using their device of anything that was science related in their yard, neighborhood or town. Using the location, a QR gps code was generated. Students researched to find out more about the science in their photo. The picture and GPS code was placed in the Educreations app. A screencast was completed to teach others about the science found in our sweet town, Hershey!
Each screencast was tagged by its location on a Google map, building a visual and interactive educational product, sharing the science found all around our town. We also embedded the screencasts in the LayAR, augmented reality app to try yet another new technology.
Future Vision-Work like this has the power to be shared further to make global connections. By sharing our special town map/s with other classes who might like to connect and learn together about each others work, has great learning potential!
As a result of my connected learning experience on Twitter, I want to encourage the same global connectedness. After hearing Angela Maiers, I evolved her thinking, “The smartest person in the room is the room.” My experiences led me to the belief, the smartest person in the world is the world! Let’s do our best to share this vision of connected world learning!

Presentation Description: Traditional story problems are dull. They’re usually disconnected from real world scenarios and learner’s experiences, and are presented in an artificial manner. Through the use of video, students and teachers can capture genuine moments of curiosity and real world examples for use in the classroom.
Aren’t ready to start filming yourself in the aisles of your local grocery store or park to point out interesting problems? You can easily use video to produce more scripted variations of traditional story problems, provide many open ended questions all tied to a common concept, or start to your flip your classroom with a blending of both teacher and learner voices.
I wanted to provide a mixture of both student examples, teacher examples, and a bit of my thought process for creating this story problems. It’s certainly not limited to Math, as video story problems would work very well for exploring conceptual science problems and reflective language arts of social studies learning. As we all struggle to adopt the Common Core State Standards here in the United States, it’s important to remember that publishing, collaborating, and sharing with other learners online is now a requirement at almost all levels of K-12 education. Giving students a way to share their voice while connecting real world situations to classroom studies is a positive step towards a more student-centered classroom where exploration and curiosity is encouraged!

Presentation Description: What can platform technology do for eLearning? Platforms are what multimedia creators use to distribute their content to a user-base. In a learning context, platforms are also used to track and analyse the behaviour of users, in order to understand precisely how content is being consumed. In this talk, Dr. Jeremy Friedberg of Spongelab Interactive discusses the concept of an online learning platform – a system that goes beyond eLearning and helps to stitch together the multiple, and often fragmented, parts of the teaching process. Following discussion of how platform technology fits into the classroom of the future, a tour of Spongelab.com offers an example of an online teaching platform built for personalized education.

Presentation Title: Technology as an Ally in the IB Science class
Presentation Description: The “Flipped Classroom” strategy involves using some type of technology to provide instruction to students before coming to class and using class time for more higher level thinking and interaction. This strategy is being used by one of ur IB Science teachers through a collaborative Google Doc. Such an approach has been beneficial to students as we look at the IB learner profile and it has also been beneficial to the teacher in terms of covering IB requirements.
Presentation Title: Technology and Drama – teaching with glove puppets
Presentation Description: A junior science class is used here to demonstrate a lesson about multicelular organisms using glove puppets with a constructivist approach to problem solving and blended learning model. It has even been adapted by the teacher Roland Gesthuizen to help explore complex topics including technology issues such as cyberbullying, privacy, programming, copyright, freedom and ethical behaviour whilst improving their literacy and social skills. This is a very engaging way to quickly assess student understanding using some simple technology and computer skills without the need for sophisticated digital equipment.
Presentation Title: Teaching Science to 21st Century Learners
Presentation Description: This presentation demonstrates how web2.0 tools can be used in the science class to enhance learning, celebrate achievements and encourage collaboration. It includes video of student interviews, examples of student work and screencasts showing how the tools can be used. Viewers will gain a ‘digital toolbox’ to encourage 21st century learners to participate, communicate and create.
