Presentation Description: While not every student might want to write their own software, understanding the big ideas of coding is a skill that all students would benefit from, even the very young ones. Understanding the key ideas of computational thinking – identifying patterns, thinking algorithmically, manipulating data, solving real problems, etc – is an important step in helping our students build mastery over their world.
This presentation will take you on a guided tour through some of the resources available to your students to help them learn the principles of creating code. We’ll check out a range of desktop and iPad apps suitable for teaching very young students to program, through to tools and websites that can help your older students learn to hack code, and much more.

Presentation Description: Scratch is a Programming language designed to be very powerful yet easy to use. It is the perfect way to introduce programming and programming concepts to school students of any age. It is easy to get started with but powerful enough to create games, interactive presentations, music, stories and solve problems. It is a great way to get kids playing and sandboxing with computers making them think in deep ways. For me Scratch is a constructivist’s dream come true, allowing students to understand their own problems, make mistakes and try new things. This presentation will give you a brief introduction to scratch, provide you with resources to explore it further and show ways I have used scratch to get students creating, playing and learning. It is suitable for any teacher in any subject area who is interested in providing students with a powerful tool to create and learn on their own.

Presentation Description: Scratch is a simple yet powerful programming language for children that is very easy to use yet contains many of the important programming constructs found in more “grown up” languages.
This presentation looks at some of the key ideas behind programming in Scratch, explores some possible tasks that students could be given to encourage problem solving and higher level thinking, and finishes with a snapshot of a student view into how Scratch is making a difference to learning.
