Introduction Letter 2011

October 27, 2011

Dear K-12 Online Conference 2011 Presenters:

Our 2011 K-12 Online Conference is drawing closer, and your conveners are sending this letter to let you know about expectations, guidelines, dates, and deadlines for the conference. Hopefully this letter and our website resources will provide you with all the information you’ll need to have a successful and positive experience with K12Online this year as a presenter.

First of all, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU for presenting and sharing ideas with our global learning community through K12Online this year. This is our SIXTH year and we continue to learn a great deal, but one thing we’ve known from the start is that our presenters are truly the heart and soul of our conference. We appreciate the time and effort you have put in and will put in to make a fantastic presentation and help educate other teachers through your work with K-12 Online this year. WE APPRECIATE YOU!

This year we have made multiple changes to simply the conference experiences for presenters as well as attendees. All content from our wikis has been integrated into our blog (this site) as pages, to improve accessibility to content because of content filtering and simplify access. We also are no longer using our Ning website. This is our ONLY conference website.

Teaser Videos

As we have since 2007, we are inviting presenters to submit short “teaser videos” about their presentations to their respective strand convener. A teaser video is OPTIONAL. Ideas for teasers from 2008 are archived, and you can also view archived teasers on our blog.

Presentation Deadlines and Guidelines

Presentations are due two weeks before the start of the week they “go live.” November 14th is the deadline for week 1 (Storytime and Team Captains) presentations, and November 21st is the deadline for week 2 (Sandbox Play and Level Up) presentations.

As you know we have a length limit for presentations. (This was instituted in 2008.) Your final presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes total in length. This file is to be in  H.264-compatible format, such as a .MOV or .MP4. We have a guide of recommended compression settings to use during export.  Also, this year each presenter will be limited to submitting ONLY ONE presentation media file. You are welcome to include links to additional supporting materials, but only one presentation file may be submitted as your main presentation file. (Keynote presentations can exceed 20 minutes.)

File and Presentation Submission Procedures

We are simplifying the presentation submission process this year for our presenters. Rather than directly uploading to Blip.tv and DotSub.com, presenters will share their presentation via our conference Dropbox account and complete and online form. Your steps will be:

  1. Upload your presentation (by your deadline) to http://ge.tt and send the ge.tt URL to your strand convener. (Your strand convener will email you the link)
  2. Post your presentation information to our conference blog using an online web form we are creating. This form, which utilizes the TDO mini forms plugin for WordPress, will include fields for you to enter your final presentation title, description, personal website, etc.

Be sure to keep a backup copy of your presentation in case it’s needed in the future!

The Afterglow (Live Event)

For the 2011 conference, we will host a single live event on Monday, December 12th at 6 pm Pacific / 7 pm Mountain / 8 pm Central / 9 pm Eastern. All keynoters, presenters and participants will be invited. This will be hosted in Blackboard Collaborate (formerly Elluminate Live) and an agenda will be forthcoming.

Please contact your strand convener via email with questions. We’re looking forward to a GREAT conference this year thanks to your super ideas and hard work!

Sincerely,

Jose, Ginger, Darren, Peggy, Susan, Kim and Wesley – K12Online11 Organizers
