Live Events 2006

When Night Falls

Our culminating event, When Night Falls, is a chain of several 1 or 2 hour long skypecasts stretching over a 24 hour period; a 24 hour continuous K12 Online coffee brake!

The purpose of When Night Falls is twofold:

i) To give participants an opportunity to share reflections, build networks, relationships and connections with each other. Hopefully some of the connections people make at K12 Online will grow into global collaborations for our students and support networks for all of us as we continue to push the envelope of teaching and learning in the 21st century.
ii) To get feedback on this year’s conference as we begin to plan for next year.

We want to keep it loosely structured to encourage open ended conversations but thought we should have a little structure to get the ball rolling for each new moderator’s shift.
Check out the moderators page of the When Night Falls wiki where you can find:

“¢ what time each skypecast is happening in your local time.

“¢ a link to join the skypecast(s) of your choice.

“¢ how to get into the chat room.

“¢ how to add yourself to our Participants Frapper Map.

“¢ a link to our take away wiki to share your feedback on K12 Online 2006.

“¢ the door into 24 hours of reflection, good conversation and fun with new friends from all over the world.

And one more thing …. we’ve created a quick survey to collect data to improve the conference next year. Please drop in and share your thoughts. It won’t take long …. your input can help to improve the education of our colleagues and children all over the world.

Thanks … and have a blast When Night Falls!

Have fun in Week 2 and be sure and join Tapped In in preparation for the upcoming When Night Falls event. We need one more moderator for that 24 hour event… so check out the wiki and if you are available in that time zone please sign up!

10/16/06

We had our first Fireside Chat this evening, Monday, Oct. 16 with preconference keynote speaker David Warlick and it was a huge success. If you missed it and would like to see the archive version please click here.

Seat Limit
Unfortunately, the Fireside Chats have a 50 seat limitation. We had no idea that so many of you would want to attend but are very flattered you did. Thank goodness the archive plays the event in its exact form, so it is the nest best thing to being there. For our next Fireside Chat it will be a first come, first serve with a 50 seat limit. And for those of you who aren’t able to join us, we will once again post the link.

Weigh In
So what did you think of the first Live Event? If you attended, or after you watch the archive, please leave us a comment and let us know what you think. See the schedule below for more upcoming Live Events.

Fireside Chats- Virtual Style
Join the conference organizers and the keynote speakers in a free wheeling open-ended chats in Eluminate. This is open to anyone interested in participating. A link to the chat will be published on the blog well before the time we’ll get together. Ask the keynotes about their presentation, share your thoughts and ideas about the other presentations seen that week. This is an opportunity for all presenters and participants to get together and discuss anything on your mind. This is also an opportunity to provide some feedback to the presenters and organizers about the conference; kudos, contructive criticism and suggestions for next year are all equally welcomed.

Do I Need Special Software?

Nope! All you need is a computer with a microphone and speakers, a head-set works best. Then on Oct. 26, 2006 at 7pm EDT, after you have watched almost all the Week One presentations and keynotes (which will post on the conference blog throughout the week) simply click on the link we will provide and the Elluminate software will load and then drop you into the virtual meeting room.

Someone will be in the room an hour early to help you check your mic and give a quick overview of the very intuitive tools used in the Elluminate environment.

The Fireside Chat Schedule is below:

Fireside Chats via Elluminate

  • Oct 16th at 6 pm Eastern – David Warlick and 4 Conveners (Darren Kuropatwa, Wes Fryer, Will Richardson (if he isnt traveling) and Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and YOU!

Is there somewhere on this site where you have provided some kind of time zone converter link so people can be sure of the time of these live events in their own time zone? I sure don’t want to miss a session because I don’t have the correct time. Thanks for your help.

    Greetings,
I tried several time to connect to the live event but have been unable to do so. It gives an error message that says download error. I have tried Flock, Mozilla and IE. Any suggestions

Wow! My learning curve just got stretched incredibly during the first fireside chat with David! There were so many things happening at once that it was hard to know where to focus. It was great learning where everyone was from who participated in the chat. However, I’m wondering if there’s a more efficient way to gather this information as we sign in so that the bulk of the time can be spent in conversation with the presenter/convener and participants? The time just seemed to fly by! Could we sign in with our name, location and what we do somewhere, possibly prior to the actual start of the conversation? Perhaps this could be entered on the whiteboard as people enter? Maybe we could advise people to sign in at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the meeting to do this. This is such a new experience for most of us and it will always take time to learn how to navigate the process at first. However, I DID enjoy hearing all of the wonderful accents in the introductions. 🙂 I just wish it didn’t take so long. Any thoughts???

I would agree with Peggy — I would rather hear more from David or whoever is leading — and have the meet and great 10 minutes earlier. Though, it was nice — it could happen earlier. IMHO, of course.

Excellent work, none the less. And thanks for having a doodling area for thos of us who are ADD (LOL, however, I am sure that it drove those who aren’t ADD crazy!)

This conference has well been worth attending and it is only the first 12 hours……so KUDOS!!

    Can’t wait until next week.
    Jennifer

    Peggy– and all

We discussed those exact things afterward. We just didnt dream we would fill all 50 seats. Big sorry to those who didnt get in this time. We have a 50 seat cap. On Oct. 26 and Oct 28 we will let the Keynotes and Presenters introduce themselves and the participants can intro on the Whiteboard. I hope you will make plans to attend.

  7. Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach

I have linked the archive above for anyone who missed the first Fireside chat!
Check it out and then leave us a note and tell us what you think?
Thanks again to David and all who attended.

  8. Chris Kaminski

I thought the Fireside Chat was awesome. I twas a matter of minutes to be logged in. Kudos to all the facilitators and a special thanks for the wonderful presentation by David. I look forward to seeing the boundaries of learning pushed over the next couple weeks.

I just watched the fireside chat in archive format at 9:53 pm PST in my living room at my home. This has the potential to be my favorite conference ever! Interesting discussion. I was particularly interested in the small number of administrators and the comments about how important it is to have Admin awareness and support. As an Elementary School Principal and someone who worked “downtown” for 2 years…the champions for tonight’s fireside content are few and far between in my neck of the woods.

  11. Chris Smith

    David
….. very innovative keynote … you deserve all the praise you’re getting .. brilliant.

    Fireside Chats:
    Sheryl .. congratulations also ….
Could the fire be turned down a bit … it’s hot here in Thailand … maybe they should be called “air conditioner chats” 😉

Technical question …. is there any way of saving the complete archive of a session as a file to replay offline ( without using screen cast software .. http://www.shambles.net/pages/staff/screencast )

I can only find options to save the white board alone or the direct messaging alone.

My only disappointment is that time hasn’t allowed me to be more involved … I suspect I could be learning more from the participants.

Isn’t this an exciting time to be alive?

    Have fun

    Chris

    Hi All,

School leaders take pride their existing web sites. We have found success when we offer supplemental technology and services. We understand it is sometimes a struggle since teachers and school administrators and techs are very busy with current events, meeting standardized testing schedule demands, adhering to existing policies, new policy development that is often a requirement prior to integration and last but not least finding community sponsors and funding.
